Background

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a powerful communication technology for contactless remote identification based on radio frequency transmission and acquisition. The use of RFID has been advocated by major enterprises such as Walmart and the Metro group.

However, various issues need to be addressed before RFID applications can be reliably deployed in real-life settings. RFID is an interdisciplinary science that span across wireless networking, software engineering, security, machine learning, antenna theory, IC design, database, visualization, material science and logistics management.

To further our impact in large scale and scope, we need to bring together top researchers in an integrated effort rather than addressing the problem on individual basis. We believe large-scale difficult problems can be better addressed through an interdisciplinary effort.

For example, a testing problem of an RFID application can be addressed from the perspective of visualization or machine learning. Through the proposed center, we can conduct UROP and FYP projects enabling elite CIVL/CSE/ECE/IELM/ISOM/MECH students to get early exposure to the interdisciplinary science of engineering RFID applications. The proposed center can also provide a nice infrastructure for research collaboration and student exchange with other major institutes to consolidate the impact on this interdisciplinary science. It also allows trainings and seminars to be held in an integrated effort.
