Introduction

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a powerful communication technology for contactless remote identification based on radio frequency transmission and acquisition. The use of RFID has been advocated by major enterprises such as Walmart and the Metro group. Current technology advancement has further enhanced the reliability of RFID systems. The cost of RFID tags and equipment has reduced in recent years to a level that mass usage RFID systems is going to take off.

However, further enhancements are still needed before RFID applications can be extensively deployed in real-life settings dealing with complex system implementation. RFID is an interdisciplinary science that span across wireless networking, software engineering, security, machine learning, antenna theory, IC design, database, visualization, material science, and logistics management. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has brought together an interdisciplinary team of faculty under the HKUST RFID Center to facilitate the research and development of RFID core technologies and applications.
